Among the hundreds of thousands of Norwegians who emigrated to the United States during the nineteenth century, many brought with them objects from a rich and well-established rural tradition. These wooden objects—primarily trunks but also drinking vessels, bowls, baskets, cupboards, bentwood or other boxes—are often exquisitely rose painted or decorated. While many have been lost, numerous objects have nevertheless been preserved. This book is a survey of the most typical and interesting objects, with emphasis on decorative styles, as well as on identifying painters. With its wealth of coloured pictures and information about the emigrants and their families, it also adds to aspects of emigration history, thus forming an important contribution to the American-Norwegian common cultural heritage.
